There are a lot of designers out there. Tens of thousands of them and each has their opinion on what is and is not beautiful, smart, important and so on. Some designers have their opinion on how you should think, act and ‘be’. Yet the kind of designers I want to work with are those who are able to create works of art. I know there are various types here from those who can design the structure of the home, design the interiors, create a beautiful landscape or just design extraoridinary furniture. We could continue on to designers of machinery, writers and painters and so much more. All of them will hopefully play a role with Sanctuary Earth House at one time or another.
True designers, no matter what their area of interest, are able to see outside the box which the rest of the world lives in. They know their ideas are unique, different, unusual even. Often they are ahead of their time. I do not speak of those who promote death or violence but those who create life. Violence and works of death are passe and as far as I’m concerned their anti-creations ought to be buried with the dead in their mausoleums and tombstones.
Sanctuary is a celebration of what is pure, right, just and lovely. It is a mixture of nature and light. It is a place of rest and hope. A refuge from the violence and fast paced chaos we have created in our city cores.
These designers are not interested in creating only from metal and glass but substance of curve and graceful intelligence. Sometimes it may be a return to the past and the Alpine or Swiss village and other times filled with energy and dancing light.
True designers are able to see where we have become traditionalized. They are able to take the mundane so we marvel at its simplicity.
For example I believe most bathrooms from the backyard outhouse to the institutionalized tiled lavatory have become so set in place we have forgotten how to really see. Must they all be the same? Is there not ways to move nature into the bathroom? Natural waterfalls, plants and sunshine? I’m not an expert but I know I never want to go back to the same ole again.
It is my hope that Earth Homes will become the style of choice in the future. Don’t think for a second that there are not a multitude of options. We have not even begun to tap the creativity potential. If we limit ourselves to the box home whether its one, two or three story we will be known as the generation that had no style or substance. What do we make and create that will last ten years let alone fifty? Appliances and cars are designed to be replaced every ten years. Our paper as in books and newspapers and magazines is designed to corrode and fade away. I may be for recycling as much as anyone but its a crime that we no longer use linen or other long lasting materials.
Though I find technology fascinating the future is electronic ink. That means our books will be made of plastic and the words as changeable as the weather or our moods.
This is why I believe true designers can not only capture their version of the truth but that truth will be recognized by others and admired as great works of art not only in our time but in the years to come. There is a place for recycling the ‘junk’ of our time so our children have materials to work with. But we must not throw away the true art and beautiful works which we are capable of creating if there is any way for us to save it.
